Engine has really excellent compression of 182 to 189 lbs on fresh (SEE LINK) dry cold reading just taken, these would be better than normal production, this has the proper 289 solid lifter ‘19’ and ‘20’ heads that are correct for this car
with ‘289’ stampings and 5.D.28 dating, (SEE LINK), slot guide push rods, screw in studs, these valves have just been set by an experienced senior mechanic, note the LINK for the proper and harmonic balancer and dual point distributor with date code of C505-12151-B, an original Shelby dated 4v restored carberator with dating, this carberator is just rebuilt for optimum performance, correct Cobra chrome air cleaner assembly with special Hi-Po orange air filter, Shelby aluminum intake, the engine was rebuilt in 1992 and kept as a collection café since, about 300 or less miles on the drivetrain since build with always fresh oil and filter and minor ‘running’ to keep lubricated, fresh tune and work has been completed in Spring 2012, since the standard 271 horsepower High –Performance V8 had strong torque of 312 ft lbs with the 10.5:1 compression with premium fuel, it is believed that with these Shelby parts upgrades and the +.30 of the bore, the power is even a bit more at around the 300 horsepower level, note that the full tune is done with the valves set, timing, again, fresh oil, has a Shelby ‘Buddy bar” and valve covers, proper dated Hi-Po exhaust manifolds with ‘keepers’,Ignition has the numbered distributor fitted with Petronix spark, an Accel high performance coil is used to make the ‘spark’ work outstandingly, a yellow top coil provided should one desire, has fresh show spark plug wires, spark plugs, new cap, Autolite ‘round case’ alternator, the engine detail fresh, proper 4-speed transmission, original, the rare 1965 Scatter shield and bell housing that was used on Shelby’s is installed, (SEE LINK TO NUMBERS, PHOTOS), SEE LINK to Data Tag Info
Again, one must use the ‘number sheet’ is used to ascertain correct and numbered parts used as a reference with “The 289 High Performance Mustang by Tony Gregory, 3d Edition, see LINK to clear VIN #5F08K748508 on inner fender, has the matching VIN on the passenger side when the fender is lifted up and see with flashlight, note that these ‘K’ codes are less than 1% of the Mustang production, the 2+2 fastbacks were the basis for the Shelby GT 350s but very, very few of these GT ‘K’ codes were convertibles, a final prep is made with check of every gorgeous cosmetic detail along with all mechanicals to make sure this drives exceptionally to couple the cosmetics, even the brake cylinders are checked, the braking system is excellent with recent check to make this a terrific performance car that can be enjoyed, (SEE LINK) in order to keep its show condition, the following items were powder coated; rear axle housing, convertible top frame, brake backing plates, Monte Carlo bar, export brace; this car has its original unmolested floors, all pans and torque boxes appear to be original...very unusual for a performance convertible of this era, the underchassis is prepared with the proper red oxide finish to be shown with a mirrored presentation as show quality done to MCA and SAAC specs, just competed, the only steel replaces were the rear lower Ford quarters as they had the small normal lower rust spots, honestly said, back in the late ‘80s, after searching for these Ford parts, it was normal then, we are all agreed that putting in only the lower half sections would have been better but here we are, the drip rails are still correct, the steel on this car is excellent,
Here are some notes from the last owner for 25 years BEFORE Fraser Dante finished their work that included the fresh underchassis detailing and full mechanical check for Spring 2012…” The car has the following options and period correct high performance Ford and Shelby parts; 1965 date coded Koni shocks. The fronts were rebuilt by Koni because they were leaking. The rear ones received a cosmetic restoration. Stainless steel exhaust system; stainless steel brake lines; stainless steel fuel lines; front GT disk brakes by stainless steel brake corporation. Brake fluid is silicone DOT 5; this was used as (I) did this because I knew the car would be sitting for long periods of time.1965 FOMOCO dated AM/FM mono radio. I've only seen one other one in my life. I understand they are now reproducing this item; I paid $2500 for this item in the early 1990's, Shelby/ cobra original aluminum T pan; 1965 original hollow letter Buddy Bar valve covers. Original S1MS cobra intake manifold. (the rare 1965 version) original Shelby 715 CFM Holley carb with Le Mans bowls. This is a 1965 date coded item; original Cobra cast iron scattershield. Shelby R model 360 degreed harmonic balancer, 1” original Shelby sway bar installed, according to information received, 1965 original Shelby center wheels were re-rimmed by Craig Connelly. They are slightly wider than original with a bit of an inset. I felt this was a good choice of wheels to go along with the rest of the car (the correct 1965 styled steel wheels are now installed and one could chose either wheel for the next owner), Cobra engine dress up kit; original HiPo exhaust manifolds; original HEH-T TopLoader transmission rebuilt by well known Jim Rupee of Southern Calif. original 3.89 open rear end gears. The flywheel was re-drilled to accept a more modern 5.0 diaphragm clutch. Engine was rebuilt with correct heavy main caps crank, solid lifters etc. Crank is 10/10; block is bored 30 over; Engine was balanced at the time of rebuild. The HiPo heads have the exact manufacture date as the rear end pumpkin. Heads have hardened valve seats and all correct HiPo items”;
History shows that the last owner purchased this car around 1986 in California, he reports that someone purchased the car new in Chicago and very early on the car was taken to California due to military obligations, it was in 1000 Palms, Ca. for many years and he is now believed the second or third owner, he then completed the first excellent restoration of this rare car, it was found in triple black and restored the same way, at that time, he spent a lot of time finding true ‘K’ code and FOMOCO and some real Shelby parts to bring this rare car to top standards, in the process, the original data tag was painted over, he did have the Kevin Marti data tag reproduced, included are his hand written notes for documentation, this sat in his collection for many years, then after receipt of this very collectable K code convertible in Atlanta, extensive work is just completed for Spring 2013 with full check of virtually everything with photo documentation for authenticity, many receipts come as part of the file of final work, (SEE LINK TO SPEC SHEETS)
Running gear is terrific, note that the transmission is dated C5AR-7006D as best as can be read, shifts great, has the proper Mustang shifter with lockout, the rear end noted is the Ford 9” with the C5AW and 5.E.7 codes in our 3.89:1 open gearing,
Interior of this 1965 ‘K’ Code Convertible has the factory optional GT package; again has a valuable original AM-FM Radio, it includes the deluxe Black (Pony) interior, padded dash, great side door panels, correct deluxe seat belts along with the full Visibility group option, there were very few reproduction parts used the build this car, most of the parts were collected during the late 80's and early 90's by the California owner, this type stitched interior is very valuable and no longer available, has a NOS trunk mat, dual mirrors with remote driver’s side mirror, day/night rear view mirror, has the very, very desirable and original 8000 rpm Ralley Pak rebuilt with functioning clock, correct Ford shifter and full length factory original console that operates the 4 speed transmission with ‘lockout’, has the black power convertible top with black boot,
Many parts are exactly as factory with all numbers as produced by Ford with exception of items like the ‘1965’ dated Shelby Koni shocks, was received with the Shelby Crager wheels by Conley/Paradise that were re-rimmed back the early 90’s, (SEE LINK), one could have these or the correct as factory 1965 Styled Steel Chrome wheels with B.F.Goodrich 6.95x14 Dual Red Line Bias Ply tires that are on the car now, these are correct for the car, the front suspension is also rebuilt with excellent steering box, alignment is completed to make sure this tracks well and drives as new, all of this work makes this GT Mustang -look outstanding with the Raven Black GT color,
Even though the last owner had this vehicle for over 25 years with his purchase in 1986 before Fraser Dante received this fine car and parts have been carefully examined today, due to the age of this vehicle, all statements are made to the best information available after careful examination but originality or genuineness of any parts of said vehicle cannot be authenticated due to age, this being said, confirmation has been made with the last owner along with the actual checking of the posted ‘numbers’ that this Mustang has matching ‘everything’ from careful examination and photos as available to document condition that are most important to the value, see the ‘K’ code information that is shown in the “Mustang…Forty Years” by Randy Leffingwell with David Newhardt for the 40th Anniversary of the Mustang at Nashville, the large version of this book is a collector piece belong to Fraser Dante, (SEE LINK)
