1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible in top driven show condition, great classic Cutlass presentation with very nice Viking Blue paint, original color ‘26’, with painted white Rally dual hood stripes that follow through the complete same striping on the trunk area, optional side pin striping, dual body colored sport mirrors with driver’s side remote option, very nice white power vinyl top with glass rear window and matching white top boot, factory SSIII body colored wheels with matching spare, trim rings and center caps, 225/70/14 BF Goodrich radial TA tires, full restored white bucket seated interior with console, matching #s Rocket 350cid /4v engine, very nicely detailed with GM gold and full decals, new hood insulation kit and clips, found initially with more modern air cleaner assembly and now the correct factory full air intake assembly is just installed for a show presentation, has correct decals to complete the full installation, 350 turbo automatic transmission, factory power steering and power front disc brakes, fresh braking system, extensive work was accomplished with the rebuilt front suspension, this aspect of the restoration sets this car apart from the normal classis Cutlass convertible, the rear suspension also has the 442 style boxed rear control arms, rear axel seals and bearings are part of the restoration work, nice trunk preparation that has now been fitted with pretty black carpet and matching spare tire cover, very good chrome throughout with good bezels, believed original bumpers with front and rear bumper guards, standard interior dash pod in nice condition, note the stock, valuable desirable Sport Steering wheel that is part of this package, fresh tune and road check for Spring 2012,
History: here is one of only 1171 Cutlass Supreme Convertibles produced in 1972, adding to an original Viking Blue ‘26’ with white bucketed seated interior as show by the data tag and breakdown of the numbers (LINK), here a hard to find example this great color that is ‘as factory’, also the date code of O5E shows this to be a May 5th that would be correct for a convertible production, there lots of past history shows that fresh work was finished in the initial Atlanta restoration for $15,720 from a local restoration shop, lots of suspension, braking, rear axle, transmission and maintenance was completed in the 2008 period that is explained later in this report, then in 2010 normal maintenance done, now in 2012 the nice repainted Viking Blue paint has new buffing that is done now for Spring 2012 at the Fraser Dante shops to bring out the luster, more mechanical work is completed, the parts alone for the proper stock air intake system are $427 at dealer cost plus the labor and Cutlass expertise to fit the desirable factory air intake with heat tube, decals and the proper exhaust manifold system, this makes under the hood look as factory, new hood pad and make it show ready, Fraser Dante also redid the trunk area to make that most solid and finishing from red oxide to black paint to the with factory aqua/gray spackle (SEE LINK TO PROCESS), then the special black carpet and tire cover for the SS111 wheel is added, this has the valuable original jack that is blasted and cleared, also history is shown with original Viking Blue paint under the hood, please see the only slightly dull paint on the inner hood fenders is certainly believed to be from the factory, this paint from now 40 years in this condition shows integrity of the is Viking Blue Cutlass,
the paint is just brought up with the professional ‘finisher’ for great luster and shine for great presentation (LINK), this work yields a pretty gloss to the paint with strong shine just prepared, this has new optional white pin striping on the side to couple the painted dual hood white stripes that follow through the same rear trunk stripes, these go with the white lettered tires, this data tag shows an original ‘26’ color (LINK), hard to find like this, we believe that the restoration included replacing the rear quarters with an excellent job, original GM used quarter panels were nicely installed in the restoration to ensure integrity, all of this discussion is to explain how really correct this classic GM convertible really is, certainly a top local show car, this has the nice lower rocker panel stainless moldings, full wheel inner wheel stainless trim around,
this ‘look’ is what has made these Cutlass convertibles so popular, especially in Viking Blue with the wonderful white contrast, here is a most desirable OLDSMOBILE 1972 CUTLASS CONVERTIBLE that is one of the most desirable collector cars that you can actually drive, the ’70 to ’72 Cutlass convertibles are really highly sought after, this is one of the most solid cars that is available today, note that this is the last year of this model run, this was a wonderful popular car back in the 70’s and is a top car for collectors who enjoy driving in the new millennium, prices on these cars are still very reasonable for a drivable collectable that has great presence,
Driving condition: effort is accomplished for driven show use, the automatic transmission works as it should, power steering, new brake hoses, new belts, power front disc brakes just checked, the pads are new, the rear brakes have been recently fully checked with about 90% left and are also in top condition, the rear end is lubed, there has a new fuel tank kit added in the earlier restoration for clean gas delivery, the floors are very solid with but with one patch on the driver’s side floor well on the existing floors, this area is just cleaned, painted to protect, recent photos show the nice condition of the floors just cleaned (LINK),
Wheels/tires/suspension: factory correct and new looking restored and hard to find factory Super Stock III wheels that are painted Viking Blue in the correct body color, (SEE LINK) proper trim rings and new factory center cap inserts with 225/70/14 BF Goodrich radial TA tires white lettered tires, these 14x7 wheels are optional for 1970 though 1972, the front end is aligned, has four KYB shocks, new upper and lower rear control arms, this had the ‘442’ boxed control arms added for safety and performance, NOTE: what sets this very nice Cutlass apart from the norm is the full replacement of the complete front suspension, all documented with front upper and lower control arms with bushings, new front coil springs, sway bar bushings, end links, work includes inner and outer tie rod ends and adjusting sleeves, new steering rack idler arm, very few Cutlass convertibles have this extension underchassis work,
engine: the original and great 350 Rocket V8 with matching numbered engine is in very good condition, very even compression across of 125 to 132 lbs across (SEE LINK) with the belief that all is as factory, the 4v Holley dual line carberator has been rebuilt and tuned, new fuel pump, new fuel line, full tank kit, the heads have CF0408659 marking seen, has a brand new battery just installed as this was seldom driven the last 3 years, the condition of this engine shows that this convertible has had great care for many years, very highly factory detailed engine bay with the gold paint, new factory air intake system, this assembly includes the ‘S’ tube off the passenger side exhaust manifold, see the photos of existing installation as factory, (SEE LINK) has the pvc valve, if someone wants the newer chrome air cleaner for an more ‘modern’ look that will even yield a bit more power, that is available,
fresh spark plug wire set, new rotor, points, distributor cap, all the timing was just set, fresh upper and lower hoses, new clamps, fresh oil, oil filter, the radiator is flushed, fresh coolant checked, has the expensive 2 ½” full aluminized dual exhaust system with nice ‘rumble’ from the Flowmaster mufflers, has chrome extensions that could be changed if someone desires, braking system just checked (SEE LINK),
in the work in the 2008 period in Atlanta, the engine was pulled for the initial detailing, new engine mounts were installed yielding a firm feel when accelerating, rear main seal, timing cover, rear axle cover was sealed, new spark plugs, now the timing is set and carberator tuned, road test completed, this engine is now detailed for driven show condition (LINK)
Summary: the full white interior is nicely restored, a more updated and cool console is used, has valuable proper GM safety belts, even the rear interior lights work when the doors are open, new rubber seals around the trunk, the door rubbers are good, everything that needed to be done for safe driving, has the day/night rear view mirror, correct pretty Viking Blue paint, recent ‘getting up’ work was done for a nice luster with full buffing to make this as a great Cruise night car, just nice enough to use and present well, VIN#3J67K2M239621 is very authentic, in the continued restoration process, a new grill assembly was used and now freshly detailed, there many receipts go with this nice car including the recent work by Fraser Dante, with the final show decals just done, has lots of receipts and history, $22,950
